Bamboo Flooring Installation

Bamboo flooring is nowadays gaining popularity in terms of being eco- friendly, aesthetic appearance and cost. It is generally used as a substitute for traditional hardwood flooring as it has two different colors and it can be turned into different shapes. Bamboo flooring can be done in any surroundings i.e. household or commercial. Bamboo flooring is done by companies, which provide variety of options of the type of bamboo, which can be used, and also the color is available in two different shades.

The installation of bamboo flooring does not require any special method. The installation process is almost same for bamboo flooring like that of hardwood flooring but some points have to be considered while installing. Some of the points to be considered may be the cleaning of the floor, removing moisture from the bamboo etc.

There are different methods of installation of bamboo floor. Some of them are as mentioned below:

o Solid strip bamboo floor installation- pre-finished solid strip flooring is best used by nailing, stapling or gluing the planks together to the sub-floor. Gluing can also be done directly to a concrete floor provided the grade is at or above expected. The flooring should be acclimated for about 3 days and this acclimation period should be at expected normal room temperature and humidity levels before and after the installation. The maximum difference between the sub-floor and the flooring should not be more than 3%. The humidity levels should be between 40% and 60%. The sub-floor should be dry, well cleaned and free from contaminants, which would otherwise affect the installation. The sub-floor should be almost smooth and in level prior to installation.

o Nail or Staple down- In this type, the flooring should be square. A ½ inch expansion space from the base plate or wall should be provided. Starter rows should be held in place with the help of nailing and once this is done additional rows can be nailed at 45-50 degree angle. Fasteners should also be placed at intervals in each plank. The nails should not be placed very close to the other.

o Glue down- In this type a premium wood flooring adhesive is generally recommended for this type of flooring. About ½ inch expansion from the base plate or wall is suggested. Starter rows can be held in place by wedging or blind nailing and once this is done the adhesive is used in a Wet-Lay or Walk-on-Work method of installation.

o Wet Lay Method- Here the adhesive is applied to the substrate with the appropriate trowel and the flooring is immediately placed on the wet adhesive.

o Walk-on-Work Method- in this type the adhesive is applied to the substrate with a suitable trowel and it is left until it develops a tack, which may require about an hour. The flooring is then installed on this tacky adhesive. The room, flooring and adhesive should be conditioned at room temperature for about 72 hours before and after installation.
